plateforme de stilo sous la remplacante de l'astra

Opel will base its next-generation Astra on a Fiat platform instead of General Motors' Delta small-car architecture.

Opel will develop the next Astra due in 2004 or 2005 using Fiat's C Frame, according to supplier sources. Fiat's low-cost, highly modular frame debuted in October on the lower-medium Fiat Stilo.

A GM spokesman said Opel has not set its plans for the next Astra.

Platform sharing between GM units and Fiat is increasing. GM and Fiat said last week that they will create a joint project center in Turin, Italy, to develop a common platform and components for future small cars.

Ulrich Schmalohr, Opel's chief engineer for small cars, will head the team. Fiat's Giorgio Cornacchia will be chief engineer. A staff of 100 engineers and other personnel will come from both companies.

The small-car team will create a platform for the 2005-2006 Fiat Punto and 178 world car program replacements, and the next Opel Corsa, planned for 2006-2007.

This is the second common platform agreement based on the 2000 strategic alliance between GM and Fiat.

In 2000, GM Europe and Fiat Auto created a Common Vehicle Architecture Team, based at Saab in Gothenburg, Sweden, to develop a premium vehicle platform.

In addition, Fiat's new large vehicle will be based on GM's Epsilon platform, now debuting on the Opel Vectra. It will be the first Fiat vehicle based on a GM platform, and is due in 2003 or early 2004.
