Info suppl:
To be introduced later this week at the Paris Show, Suzuki's new Concept-S design study combines the company's car, motor-cycle and information/communication technology in a very mean-looking vehicle indeed.
For its length of under 12 feet, it's particularly wide-tracked at 5' 8", and the wheelbase is about as long as it can practicably be. The result is that this is a really wheel-at-each-corner affair. The company's design team has given the car 18" alloys, and the wrap-round windscreen with concealed A-pillars is a striking feature.
Suzuki says that the almost vertical headlamps are a "suggestion" of the new shape it means to give its next generation of compact cars.
The Concept-S has permanent four-wheel drive, a lightweight alloy 1.6-litre engine and a six-speed sequential manual gearbox. There's some benefit here from Suzuki's experience with the Ignis in the Super 1600 FIA Junior World Rally Championship.
Inside, the shape of the fascia has cues from both biplane wings and motor-cycle uprights. Gear change, handbrake, indicators and wipers are all operated by push-buttons rather than by conventional car controls. The air conditioning and sound system are controlled via a screen using similar technology to that of a mobile phone.
There's some very advanced software on board. The Concept-S uses a keycard to lock and unlock the doors, and start up, but it also has fingerprint authorisation for the driver's favourite engine and suspension settings, and can download, store and exchange music files in MP3 format. The navigation system, exclusive to Suzuki, can automatically follow a route downloaded from the Internet.
As well as all that, it looks as if Suzuki may have finally cracked the problem of turning out a genuine head-turner.
