BMW's latest generation 3.0 liter inline 6 engine will be launched this September as the new base engine for the 6 series. It will then gradually replace the current 3.0 liter inline 6 engine in all other model ranges.
This new engine generates 258 HP at 6,600 rpm with a maximum torque 300 Nm (221 lb-ft) at 2,500 rpm. The current engine pumps out 231 HP at 5,900 rpm / 300 Nm (221 lb-ft) at 3,500 rpm).

First high-revving V10 engine to be featured in a regular-production saloon

The V10 is the only high-revving power unit to be featured in a series-production car. The M5's engine has ten cylinders, a cubic capacity of 5 liters and produces a maximum output of 507 bhp and a maximum torque of 384 lb-ft, making the M5 the most powerful final production model in the BMW line-up. The segment of powerful sports sedans was introduced 20 years ago with the presentation of the first M5 and this new engine once again sets the benchmark in this particular segment.

There is, however, more to it than pure performance. What is important for M automobiles is acceleration and driving dynamics, the latter of which is dependent on the actual forward thrust and the vehicle's weight. The drive forces at the driven wheels are significantly influenced by the engine torque and the transmission ratio. The high-revving concept caters to an optimum transmission ratio, thus guaranteeing an impressive forward thrust.

The perfect choice: high-revving concept

For the BMW M engineers the compact, high-revving normally aspirated engine was the ideal choice. With a red line of 8,250 rpm, the ten-cylinder engine has ventured into terrain that has so far been reserved for red-blooded racing cars. Compared to the previous M5 eight-cylinder engine, performance has increased by more than 25 per cent. Reste à voir également à l'usage ... de mémoire de la presse à l'époque l'augmentation de la puissance des 320i par exemple de s'est pas traduite d'autant au niveau des performances et de l'agrément !
