Non-cancer health effects in exposed workers include bronchial inflammation, cough, phlegm, wheezing, and loss of lung function. Animal studies found much of the same effects. Diesel exhaust has been shown to increase antibody and cytokine production in humans, leading to allergy and asthma type symptoms. Some mouse studies suggest potential impacts on female reproduction, but there is little evidence of this in humans.
Diesel exhaust was found to be mutagenic to bacteria. DNA alterations were also found in monkeys and rats that inhaled diesel exhaust. Researchers found DNA alterations in blood cells of workers exposed to diesel exhaust. Animal tests with long exposures to diesel exhaust showed slight increases in lung cancer incidence. However, epidemiological evidence supports increases in lung cancer to people who experience occupational exposures to diesel exhaust, such as truck drivers, railroad workers, heavy equipment operators, and others. Diesel exhaust is now listed by many regulatory and health agencies as a probable carcinogen.
