FRANKFURT, Dec 10 (Reuters) - The luxury Audi unit of German carmaker Volkswagen AG <VOWG.DE> said on Tuesday it planned to spend 11.4 billion euros ($11.5 billion) over the next five years overhauling its product range.
Audi said its supervisory board had agreed to invest the sum, which would represent around seven percent of sales volumes, between 2002 and 2007. A good 70 percent of the investment would go into new products, the firm said.
Once the black sheep in the VW family, the Ingolstadt-based Audi unit is now a key part of VW's brand strategy and generated about a quarter of the parent group's profit last year.
Volkswagen, currently suffering from a low point in its product cycle, said last month it had lifted its long-term spending plans as it gets set to update key models and push annual output up to six million vehicles by 2007.
Audi is due to launch a new version of its small A3 hatchback next year, and is also thought to be considering developing a so-called "cross-over" model, a cross between a luxury coupe and a sports utility vehicle.
An Audi spokesman also said on Tuesday the company was in talks with sportscar maker Maserati, an arm of Italy's stricken Fiat <FIA.MI>, about a possible technical cooperation. He declined to give any further details.
Maserati said in a statement it had been in talks with Audi "for some time... with a view to possible technical and commercial cooperation."
Italian newspapers La Repubblica and Corriere della Sera said on Tuesday Fiat was considering switching Alfa Romeo into its Ferrari-Maserati arm, and said Volkswagen was considering taking a 49 percent stake in the new luxury group.
A Volkswagen spokesman declined to comment.
Shares in VW, which have been one of the European sector's weaker performers this year, were up 2.58 percent at 38.99 euros by 1515 GMT, broadly in line with the DJ European autos index <.SXAP>.

MILAN, Dec 10 (Reuters) - Fiat <FIA.MI> is talking to Volkswagen <VOWG.DE> about a possible partnership in luxury cars, a move that could affect Fiat's option to sell its car arm to General Motors Corp.<GM.N>, sources said on Tuesday.
"Talks are under way," one of the political and financial sources told Reuters. "The German company would bring some assets (to the agreement)."
As part of the proposed deal, Fiat would split its Alfa Romeo marque out of loss-making car arm Fiat Auto and fold it into a new luxury division along with sportscar brands Ferrari and Maserati, the sources said.
Fiat was "close to an agreement" with Volkswagen with a view to making the German company a partner in the luxury division and there were also less-developed talks on possible cooperation in the smaller car operations of Fiat Auto, they said.
Spokesmen for Fiat and for Volkswagen declined to comment.
The proposal was agreed between members of the Agnelli family that controls Fiat and the chief executive of investment bank Mediobanca <MDBI.MI>, Vincenzo Maranghi, the sources said.
Earlier on Tuesday, Fiat's Director General Alessandro Barberis said in a statement the Turin-based group was sticking to its original strategy for turning around Fiat Auto, despite the resignation of group CEO Gabriele Galateri.
Audi, part of Volkswagen, and Maserati said on Tuesday they were in talks about "technical cooperation."

), mais que VW ne compte pas developper reellement ces marques-la. Idem pour Bentley mais par le biais de la doublette A8/Phaeton.
