Toujours bien pour PSA, ca va faire plaisir a certains....
WARSAW, Jan 9 (Reuters) - Poland's new passenger car sales continued a strong year-on-year rise in December as an economic recovery and lower credit rates boosted the automotive market, private car market monitoring agency Samar said on Thursday. According to monthly figures, Poles bought 24,841 new cars in December, up 27 percent from the same period of 2001, the sixth consecutive monthly rise.
But despite strong sales in the second half, full-year sales of 308,000 units were the lowest since 1995, due to heavy falls early in the year.
"Despite the weak full-year result we can look with hope into the future," Samar head Wojciech Drzewiecki said.
"There are reasons to believe that this year will be better. Sales should rise and approach the levels seen in 2001, which would mean growth by five to seven percent," said Drzewiecki.
Italy's Fiat Spa <FIA.MI>, which produces several of its compact models in Poland, clung on to its lead with a market share of 18.3 percent, but the troubled carmaker's sales were down nearly 30 percent in all of last year.
Volkswagen's <VOWG.F> Skoda unit was second with a 11.7 percent market share, or 35,974 percent units sold. VW itself sold 20,025 cars for a 6.5 percent market share.
Toyota <7203.T> and PSA Peugeot Citroen <PEUP.PA> were among the fastest growing car makers in Poland. The Japanese giant sold 23,489 cars in 2002, 55 percent more than a year ago.
Peugeot sales jumped 26 percent to 22,910 units, while Citroen was up 14 percent to 12,736 units, with the French manufacturer easily taking over territory left vacant by Korea's bankrupt Daewoo, whose sales slumped 55 percent to 18,070.
